Hiking in Merano and environs
A journey on foot
Merano is where North and South meet. Take your time to hike through the landscape
and discover the diversity of its beautiful nature. In the valleys you will find marvellous
mediterranean vegetation, and also alongside the old watercourses and hiking paths
that lead up to some of the highest mountain peaks in the Alps.
The high mountain trail
"Meraner Höhenweg" , which leads around the Texel Group Nature Park is a pleasure
for walking and also has some wonderful views.
Hiking excursions (suggestions):
Romantic routes, Alpine adventure
The area offers a wide choice for the fashionable sport of hiking. You can take it easy with a stroll along the region's famous Waalwege - picturesque paths beside narrow channels that were once used for the irrigation of fields and orchards. The Marlinger Waalweg from Töll to Oberlana is especially beautiful. The longest of its type in the whole of South Tyrol, it leads through sunny vineyards and shaded chestnut forests and on the Wood Experience Path gives information about the sensitive ecosystem at the same time. A dream trip for the romantic is provided by the organised experience hikes all around the village of Lana through deep chestnut forests at a bright sunrise or on mysterious nights with the full moon. Extensive larch forests and emerald green mountain lakes, Alpine flowers, chamois and marmots, cosy huts and peaceful mountain pastures - this is the Alpine world of the Merano holiday region. This is also where the Merano High Path runs - one of the most beautiful hiking circuits in the Alps, where hikers can walk at an altitude of from 1,000 to almost 3,000 metres. The entire 80 km circuit around the Texel Group Nature Reserve takes three to four days but individual stages also promise a unique experience.
Another highlight for ambitious hikers:
The glacier tour to the site of the Ötzi excavation with experienced mountain guides. Seven to eight hours on foot includes the fascinating walk via the Hochjochferner to Tisenjoch, where the mummified body was discovered in 1991 - a high Alpine challenge in the fabulous world of mountains over 3000 metres.
